Phil Crutchley celebrates an extraordinary 50 years in the power industry, a career spanning generations of technology, major changes across the sector and countless opportunities to share his knowledge with others.

From his early days as an operator at Drakelow Power Station to becoming a highly experienced trainer working across the UK and internationally, Phil’s career has been anything but ordinary. Along the way, he has witnessed the evolution of power generation, developed generations of operators and engineers, and built a reputation for making complex subjects practical, engaging and relevant.

In this special feature, we look back at Phil’s remarkable journey, the experiences that shaped his career, his passion for training and the lasting impact he continues to have on those he teaches.

A Career That Started Somewhere Unexpected

When you think of a 50-year career in the power industry, you might expect it to have started with a clear ambition to work in engineering or power generation.

For Phil, that wasn’t quite the case. After completing Business Studies at Burton-on-Trent Technical College, Phil initially had his sights set on a very different career. His ambition was to become a farmer, and he went on to work for an agricultural auctioneering company, spending several years involved in cattle markets, farm sales and the wider agricultural industry.

Eventually, Phil got the opportunity to pursue his farming ambitions. He went on to farm 60 head of red deer, alongside sheep and rare-breed pigs, before later running his own butcher’s shop and farmers’ market. But in 1976, a change of direction would set Phil on the career path that would ultimately define the next five decades of his life.

His father was a mechanical fitter at Drakelow Power Station, a coal-fired power station near Burton-on-Trent. Under pressure to follow in his parents’ footsteps, Phil moved to Burton-on-Trent and joined the station’s operations team. It was the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

From Power Station Operator to Lead Trainer

Starting his career at Drakelow, Phil completed an extensive education and training programme under the CEGB (Central Electricity Generating Board). His operational experience continued to grow as he worked across Cottam and Sutton Bridge power stations, gaining valuable hands-on knowledge of power station operations and the people, processes and equipment behind them. It was this practical experience that would later become one of Phil’s greatest strengths as a trainer. Phil subsequently moved into training with Empower Training, before continuing his career through the E.ON Engineering Academy and later the Uniper Engineering Academy.

Over the years, his role developed considerably. Phil progressed to become Lead Trainer, overseeing thermal power plant operator training and taking responsibility for the High Voltage training team. It was during this period that Phil truly discovered his calling.

Training gave him the opportunity to combine his extensive operational experience with something he genuinely enjoyed — helping other people develop their knowledge, skills and confidence. For Phil, training was never simply about delivering information. It was about making sure people understood what they were learning, why it mattered and how they could apply it in the real world.

Turning Experience into Opportunity

For many people, reaching such a significant point in their career might have marked the beginning of retirement. For Phil, it became the catalyst for something new. Determined to continue doing what he loved and, importantly, to continue passing his knowledge and experience on to others, Phil helped establish Power Plant Training Ltd (PPTL). Today, Phil oversees the training delivered by PPTL, helping to ensure that courses remain consistent, relevant and aligned with the needs of the modern power generation industry.

His role involves much more than standing in front of a classroom. Phil works closely with the training team, contributes to the development of new courses and ensures that the learning journey — from new entrant through to an able and competent member of an operations team — is supported by effective, practical training.

Turning Industry Experience into Practical Training

One of Phil’s greatest strengths is his ability to take decades of real-world experience and turn it into training that learners can genuinely relate to.

For site-specific training programmes, Phil works closely with clients to establish the required scope of work and understand the intended learning outcomes. From there, he develops training that is tailored to those requirements, while ensuring that learners are accurately assessed against the knowledge and competencies expected of them.

His experience covers a broad range of power generation technologies. Throughout his career, Phil has delivered training across the UK and internationally, including in several European countries as well as Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and parts of the Middle East. He has trained people working with Combined Cycle and Energy Recovery facilities, as well as having extensive historical experience within coal-fired generation and more recent involvement with biomass. This breadth of experience has given Phil an unusual insight into the industry and the many different roles, technologies and challenges that make up modern power generation. And one subject remains particularly close to his heart: Chemistry.

Phil has a strong knowledge of power plant chemistry and enjoys sharing that knowledge with learners, helping them understand how seemingly complex principles relate directly to the safe and efficient operation of a plant.

Keeping Pace with a Changing Industry

Fifty years in the power industry means Phil has witnessed enormous change; The industry he entered in 1976 looks very different from the industry of today. Technologies have evolved, operational practices have changed and the way people learn has transformed dramatically. Phil has embraced those changes.

While classroom-based training remains an important part of PPTL’s offering, modern learning technologies have opened up new opportunities for learners and trainers alike. Online training can provide flexibility and accessibility, while simulation technology offers learners the opportunity to experience realistic plant operating scenarios in a controlled environment.

PPTL has access to a 660MW simulator, providing a valuable training environment where learners can develop their understanding of plant operation and decision-making. For Phil, technology isn't about replacing practical experience, it is another tool that can be used to make training more effective. His approach combines modern training methods with something that cannot be replicated by technology alone: 50 years of real-world industry experience.

The Impact of a Great Trainer

For Phil, perhaps the most rewarding part of training is seeing people develop. Over the course of his career, he has worked with countless operators, engineers and industry professionals, sharing experiences gathered from decades of working within the power generation sector. His knowledge is extensive, but it is his approach to sharing that knowledge that makes such a difference.

Phil has a natural ability to explain complex subjects in a practical and accessible way. His operational background means he can draw on real experiences, examples and situations to help learners understand how theory translates into day-to-day plant operations. He also understands that every learner is different; some may be new to the industry and building their knowledge from the ground up. Others may already have years of operational experience but need to develop their understanding in a particular area.

Phil’s role is to meet learners where they are, challenge them where appropriate and help them leave the training with greater knowledge and confidence. That passion for developing people is something that has remained constant throughout his career.

50 Years of Knowledge and a Legacy Still Growing

Looking back over five decades, Phil has experienced an incredible amount of change.

-            He has seen the industry move from the era of the CEGB and coal-fired generation towards new technologies and evolving approaches to energy production.

-            He has worked across different power stations, organisations and countries.

-            He has trained people at different stages of their careers and shared his experience with professionals from a wide range of backgrounds.

But perhaps the most significant part of Phil’s story isn't the number of years he has worked in the industry.

-            It is the knowledge he has passed on during those years.

Every person he has trained represents another opportunity for that knowledge to continue through the industry. The lessons, experiences and practical understanding Phil has shared don't simply remain in the classroom, they become part of the people he has trained and the work they go on to do.

That is a legacy that continues to grow.

But beyond the business, I think his greatest legacy will be the people he has helped to develop throughout his career and the knowledge he has passed on to them.
