Case Study: Mobilisation Training for Enfinium
EPC Client: Acciona
End Client: Enfinium
Trainer: Phil Crutchley
Location: West Bromwich
Course: Bespoke Introduction to Plant Systems
Delivery: 1st – 4th September 2025
The Brief:
Spanish engineering giant Acciona, acting as the EPC (Engineer-Procure-Construct) contractor, partnered with Power Plant Training Ltd to develop and deliver a tailored mobilisation training programme. This initiative was a key component of their broader commissioning and handover responsibilities for Enfinium, the end client and operator of the facility.
The training was a foundational requirement to prepare operations personnel for one of the UK’s most advanced Energy Recovery Facilities, known as The Kelvin Project.
Project Challenges:
The Kelvin ERF presented several unique technical and operational challenges:
The plant is designed to process 395,000 tonnes of municipal waste per year.
It incorporates one of the largest waste firing unit ever supplied by Babcock and Wilcox.
The facility will generate 44MW of electricity, powering the equivalent of over 95,000 homes.
Its complex system integrates advanced waste combustion, steam generation, and energy conversion technology.
Given the scale and sophistication of the plant, training required a highly customised approach to equip both seasoned engineers and newcomers with the foundational knowledge and confidence needed to operate the system safely and efficiently from day one.
Our Solution:
Working in close collaboration with Acciona, Power Plant Training designed and delivered a comprehensive, high-level introductory course tailored specifically to the Kelvin facility.
Led by expert trainer Phil Crutchley, the course was structured to:
Bridge the knowledge gap between theoretical understanding and real-world plant operations.
Ensure all trainees – whether experienced or new to the power industry – gained core competencies necessary for effective performance.
Support Acciona’s commitment to a safe, seamless transition from construction to operations.
Key features of the training included:
Face-to-face delivery by a seasoned industry professional.
Access to practical plant examples and walkdowns, bringing the theoretical elements to life.
Designed as a foundation course, enabling participants to build upon their learning with further modules from Power Plant Training’s portfolio.
Key Benefits
Accelerated readiness of operational staff ahead of plant commissioning.
A highly engaging, site-specific course that aligned with real plant systems and challenges.
Boosted confidence and capability across the operations team.
Positioned Enfinium and Acciona for a safe and effective start-up of this cutting-edge facility.
Client Feedback
“When we contacted PPTL, they offered us different courses, and although those didn’t really meet our expectations, thanks to your collaboration during the negotiation process and your flexibility working with us to understand our needs, PPTL was able to provide a clear and tailored training plan that met our expectations and Final Client’s too.
Since the beginning of the process, the communication with PPTL has been very easy; we always received a professional and responsive approach, which made we reached a well-balanced training plan for our plant.
Regarding the training performance itself, we are very happy with the outcome we are currently having. The trainer demonstrates a wide knowledge and experience, the content is relevant, practical and tailored to our Kelvin plant and I have to say that I am impressed by the way it is being taught. The training is performed in a professional way but awakening the trainees’ interest and maintaining their attention by making them participate in the subjects taught with some practical/theorical videos, games and questions.
First feedback of our trainees is very positive as they feel engaged and find the training both with good technical content and applicable to their roles.
In short, we are very satisfied with the training plan and execution provided by PPTL and look forward to potential future collaborations.” – Paloma Ballestero Pérez, Site Commissioning Lead, Acciona
